There is a pause and the artist begins to sing a sorrowful melody, during which the images, positioned on tripods, reveal a visual alignment with the landscapes in which they are placed. A musical harmony of chanting voices is created as different scenes unfold, overlapping sounds onto the next. This anticipates the protagonist’s journey as he ‘harmonizes’ the images of Shasta with his surroundings, aligning the image with mountains in the distance. Visual and sonic layering becomes emblematic of a questionable endeavor to unify anticipatory thoughts and expectations with actualized experiences. As the tripod rests on the keyboard it plays a single note that resonates, as if powering the light that illuminates the image. This becomes reminiscent of the relationship that sound plays in effecting how we read a scene in a movie. Here, image and ‘soundtrack’ unite to form a fractured and questionable anthem to an imagined history that obscures a sense of the present because of an over reliance on a romanticized future.
