a paradox in distance, 2014
chromogenic transparency in light box, tripod, Casiotone MT-68 Keyboard,
dimensions variable, (light box: 24” x 24” x 5”)
Overlapping feelings of experiencing geographic, historical and emotional distance are central to this work. As the tripod rests on the keyboard it plays a single note that resonates, as if powering the light that illuminates the image. This becomes reminiscent of the relationship that sound plays in effecting how we read a scene in a movie. Here, image and ‘soundtrack’ unite to form a fractured and questionable anthem to an imagined history that obscures a sense of the present because of an over reliance on a romanticized future. The work highlights a struggle to find any sense of truth amidst the push and pull of misleading factors, pointing to the tenuousness and vulnerability of the events that shape experience.
